Description of laboratory and equipment

The group uses three laboratories: the Laboratory for Biomechanics, Automation and Systems, the Laboratory for Expert Systems, Machine Learning and Image Processing, and the Laboratory for Distributed Systems and Software Engineering. The laboratories are equipped with various devices for measurements in biomechanics (force platform, EMG, XSens inertial sensors) and image acquisition (camcorders, 3D cameras and high-speed cameras…), as well as other sensors (Hololens 2, sensor glove, accelerometers, Kinect). In addition to the above, the laboratories are also equipped with several drones, mobile robotic platforms (BlueROV2, Leo Rover, Mover6, M5ver 5), robotics kits (Arduino, NXT Mindstorm, Turtlebot) and several types of embedded computers.

project title

Computer intelligence for recognition and support of human activities (CIRESA)

Description of research in a 5-year term

Research within this project includes the development of an aerial surveillance system based on the analysis of aerial images as well as the development of computer vision and artificial intelligence algorithms aimed at robust monitoring, inspection and recognition of objects of interest with the aim of implementation in various applications for monitoring open and closed spaces. A bilateral project with Grenoble – INP has been proposed on this topic.

For the purposes of improving medical procedures (operations and diagnostics), the possibility of fusion of different visual contents and drawing and aligning them with real objects on a common display in augmented reality will be investigated (I. Zoraja).

Continuation of research in the field of precision agriculture based on the introduction of artificial intelligence and new technologies (UAV, IoT,…). Initial equipment was acquired (UAV with multispectral and thermal camera) and contacts were established with experts in the field (University Department of Marine Studies, Mediterranean Agriculture Study of the University of Split, IHU). The results of the HRZZ project evaluation are awaited.

Research in the field of digital image processing, robotics, machine learning (recognition and classification) as well as the formation of knowledge-based systems is of particular importance for the successful implementation of the tasks that are being carried out or are planned to be carried out. On the topic of applications in robotics, a bilateral project with Slovenia (Univerza v Ljubljani) has been submitted.

Special attention is paid to the development and implementation of new, intelligent systems that use deep neural networks for the detection, classification and recognition of objects and making correct decisions in unknown environments. An intensification of research related to the use of drones in fire prevention and monitoring of burned areas is expected.
